MSF shocked and saddened at killing of staff member during attack in Cabo Delgado

On Saturday, 04 February, an attack occurred on the road between Macomia and Pemba, near Mitambo, in Mozambique, where a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) staff member, during his day off, was wounded while travelling on public transport to visit his family in Pemba. A few hours later, our colleague passed away while receiving medical care, leaving behind his wife and five children. He was a driver in Macomia who had joined MSF in August 2019.

ʺToday, we are grieving as we lost a colleague who, like all staff, was fully committed to assisting displaced families, many times facing significant risks. This is a very sad day for our team and us. We are providing all the support to our colleague’s family,ʺ said Federica Nogarotto, MSF Head of Mission in Mozambique.

MSF is alarmed by continued violence in Northern Mozambique and indiscriminate attacks killing and wounding civilians in Cabo Delgado. MSF has been providing life-saving assistance in Cabo Delgado since 2019, including primary health care, mental health and psychosocial support, the distribution of basic items, and health promotion activities.

Why is this Ebola outbreak so different?
On May 15, 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ministry of Health officially declared an Ebola disease outbreak in the northeast of the country, where Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams are operating. Since then, authorities have reported nearly 500 suspected cases and more than 130 deaths across multiple health zones. On the same day, Uganda announced the virus had crossed its borders. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus - rarer and one for which no vaccine or treatment has been approved yet. Here is what we know about the unfolding crisis in the DRC and Uganda.
